Zippo

The click flick sound of the famous and sometimes infamous Zippo lighter ignites dreams of bad boys riding their motorcycles across the desert, or epic heroes using their last ounce of strength to send the protagonist to an explosive and fiery death. This instrument of fire has become an iconic piece of equipment that is both timeless and shameless. The first Zippo lighter was made in 1933. It was inspired by an Austrian cigarette lighter of similar design. These lighters became popular in the United States military, especially during World War II. Zippo lighters became increasingly used in advertising by companies large and small through the 1960s and many of the early ones are works of art painted by hand. Zippo lighters are able to stay lit in harsh weather, due to the design of the windscreen and adequate rate of fuel delivery. As such, they have been highly popular with backpackers.
