Description
The echo of footsteps and wandering whispers fills the cathedral's interior space with a distinct soundscape unlike any other. A mixed crowd of devout worshippers and tourists from around the world take in the high ceilings and ancient iconography with awe, delight, and occasional indifference. Winchester Cathedral is one of the largest cathedrals in England, with the longest nave and overall length of any Gothic cathedral in Europe. It was originally founded in 642 and became part of a monastic settlement in 971. Construction of the cathedral began in 1079 under bishop Walkelin, and was completed in 1093. Nowadays the cathedral draws many tourists as a result of its association with Jane Austen, who died in the city and is buried in the cathedral's north aisle of the nave.
