Description
There is a unique sound on this beach, as crashing waves attack the stone lined shore, and then retreat through crevices between the rocks, creating a curious gurgling sound unlike any other beach on earth. The hard little pebble soldiers seem to defend the beach from the ocean's crushing strength, but in fact those hopeful guardians of the shore, unaware of their fate, are themselves slowly being turned into sand with every wet stroke upon their faces. While this beach landform is most commonly associated with Western Europe, examples are found in Bahrain, the United States and in a number of other world regions such as the east coast of New Zealand's South Island.
