Description
The cold grey streets catch the falling rain against their hard stone facades with the all too familiar thump that only the soft city storm can produce. Glistening fields of pavement permeate the now glowing landscape as streetlights illuminate the lustrous alleyways and send shadows sinking into the blackness of backed-up storm drain puddles. A rain garden is a planted depression that allows rainwater runoff from impervious urban areas like roofs, driveways, walkways, parking lots, and compacted lawn areas the opportunity to be absorbed. These gardens can cut down on the amount of pollution reaching creeks and streams by up to 30%. Rain gardens are beneficial for many reasons: improve water quality by filtering runoff, provide localized flood control, aesthetically pleasing, and provide interesting planting opportunities. They also encourage wildlife and biodiversity, and tie together buildings and their surrounding environments in attractive and environmentally advantageous ways.
