Turn Signal

The tick-tock of the turn signal has been a fixture in most automobiles since 1939. Today, turn signals are required for any motor vehicles driving on public roadways in most countries. Interestingly enough, lights have not always been used as an auto's turn signal. From the 1920s to the 1950s, small retractable flags called "trafficators" were sometimes used in lieu of lights. However, their use was discontinued due to their tendency to break off or stick in the closed position.
