Tierra del Fuego

Watery wind washes through the trees like an airborne ocean sweeping across the side of some enormous undersea mountain. The landscape is consumed by the rushing air causing everything in its path to lean over and creek with the pushing breath of earth. Slowly, every standing object is worn down to its bare roots, suffering under the weight of the mighty wind, and not a soul is left who can save himself from being whittled away into nothingness. Tierra del Fuego; Spanish for "Land of Fire", is an archipelago off the southernmost tip of the South American mainland, across the Strait of Magellan. The name derives from the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan sailing for the Spanish Crown, who was the first European to visit these lands in 1520. He believed he was seeing the many fires of the Yaghan people, which were visible from the sea and that the "Indians" were waiting in the forests to ambush his armada. The numbers of the native Selk'nam and Yaghans were greatly reduced by introduced diseases and by unequal conflicts with settlers. Today the Selk'nam are practically extinct as a distinct people, with all of their very few descendants being mestizos and their language extinct.
