Description

The ancient street scene of sellers and buyers bargaining curbside is almost universal. It is hard to imagine a culture or time when at least a few forward thinking farmers and crafty craftsmen didn't set aside at least one day a month to spread their goods on the sidewalk and scream at passersby, offering deals on the most delicious or rare items being sold at a discount. Street markets in Greece are called laike agore, meaning "people's market". They are very common all over Greece, including the capital, Athens, and its suburbs. Street markets in Hong Kong are held all the days except few traditional Chinese holidays like Chinese New Year. Stalls opened at two sides of a street were required to have licenses issued by the Hong Kong Government. In Hong Kong there are street markets of various kinds such as fresh foods, clothing, cooked foods, flowers, and even electronics. The earliest form of markets is known as Gaa si. Some of them are gradually being replaced by shopping centers. There are many markets in London just a few maentioned above but the most popular is Borough Market which sell most fresh produce as well as having a bakery. Farmers' markets are increasing in the United States and Canada, usually held out-of-doors, in public spaces, where local farmers can sell produce to the public.
