Description
The great hall of the cathedral echoes with the sound of people walking past and finding their seats. The ceilings are high vaulted and beautifully decorated. They carry sound and amplify it deeply. In the distance you can hear nearby trains and the cathedral bells. You focus on the sounds of heels clicking on the marble floors as they walk past the intricately carved statues.
The St. John's Cathedral (in full: the Kathedrale Basilica of St. John Evangelist) in the town of 's-Hertogenbosch is often considered as the peak of the Brabant Gothic . The St. John is on the corner of the Parade and the Torenstraat which is the main entrance. The cathedral impresses by its size and wealth of sculpture. Unique in the Netherlands are the double flying buttresses and unique in the world, the 96 air arc figures. The cathedral was originally a parish church built in 1366 and became collegiate church to cathedral and in 1559 the new Diocese of 's-Hertogenbosch exalted.
