Description
These screeching little squirrel monkey's masquerade as masters of the jungle, jaunting from one tree to the next, taking no care as to who or what they disturb in their endless curiosity and effort to capture food. But no matter how annoying their antics, these cute little critters capture a heartfelt happiness with their bold, bright, and buoyant nature. These tropical monkeys of Central and South America live together in multi-male/multi-female groups with up to 500 members. They have a number of vocal calls, including warning sounds to protect themselves from large falcons. Unlike many other monkeys, their tail is not used for climbing, but as a kind of "balancing pole" and also as a tool. Squirrel monkeys are omnivores, eating primarily fruits and insects. Occasionally they also eat nuts, buds, eggs and small vertebrates.
