Description

The cavern of this cathedral echos the entry and exit of everyone who comes to pray or just peruse the magnificent mix of art that adorns every inch of this exquisite example of the timeless testimony that is the temple. Saint Servaas was the first bishop of the Dutch city of Maastricht and is now the city's patron saint. According to tradition the saint's remains are buried in the Basilica of Saint Servaas in a crypt dating from the 6th century. His tomb in the crypt has been a favored place of pilgrimage for many centuries. Famous visitors include Charlemagne and Pope John Paul II. Servaas built the Church of Our Dear Lady over the Roman temple of Fortuna and Jupiter, was a widely-travelled diplomat, and is recorded as being present at several synods and church councils. Servaas died in Maastricht in 384. This sound uses the following file from Freesound: http://freesound.org/samplesViewSingle.php?id=94828
