Description
The echoing chamber of this building captures the many footsteps, voices, baggage bumping, and musical background sounds sent sailing in every direction within its great cavernous walls. Find yourself consumed by the movement inside this lively urban center of faithfulness, fraternizing, and frequent tourism. The cathedral's design is based upon the Chapel of St. John the Baptist. It was consecrated as a chapel in 942 and expanded in the Romanesque style in 1038. Some traces of this phase of expansion are still evident in the present day crypt. In the 14th through 16th centuries, nearly continuous expansion projects in the Gothic style were made and construction was considered complete June 7, 1569. The church of Saint Bavo was also the site of the baptism of Charles V.
