A smooth sound of city life lingers in the cold breeze. Little here is brash or brazen, and yet the soft sounds of this place have a certain boldness, capturing the cold air and cracked earth by surprise with their warmth and welcoming way. If you take the time to let go of your tension and relax, you might find that there is something special in what sounds like a typical urban arena. Abandon the idea of being in the city or outside of it, and simply stand in the middle of the great expanse of the unknown. Rotterdam is a city in the Dutch province of South Holland, situated in the west of the Netherlands. The port of Rotterdam is the largest in Europe. From 1962 to 2004 it was the world's busiest port until surpassed by Shanghai. Settlement at the lower end of the fen stream Rotte dates from at least 900 CE. Around 1150, large floods in the area ended development, leading to the construction of protective dikes and dams. A dam on the Rotte or 'Rotterdam' was built in the 1260s and was located at the present-day Hoogstraat ('High Street').
