Description
The rusty old train tickles the tracks as it travels along the countryside, moving almost as peacefully as the passengers that sit patiently inside its cars, with the occasional steel screech to break the successive cascading sound of the metal wheels bouncing their way to the next destination. Rail transport is a commonly used mode of long-distance transportation in India. The network traverses the entire country, covering a total length of 63,140 kilometres (39,233 mi). It is said to be the 4th largest railway network in the world, transporting over 6 billion passengers and over 350 million tonnes of freight annually. Indian Railways carried over 7 billion passengers in 2009.
