Description
The drizzle drowns out your thoughts as you sit still beneath your plastic canopy, covering that perfect little hair dew. The silence beyond the rain is a bit frightening. You're not used to such peace and tranquility, And as the rain begins to pour down harder you wonder if this might be the last day of your life. After all the things you have done, and all the ways in which you preached your superiority to the world, now that you are here alone you can barely grasp any knowledge at all. You are at a loss for words, thoughts, or even feelings about life, and the thunder just seems to be mocking you. An umbrella (also called a brolly, parapluie, rainshade, sunshade, gamp, bumbershoot, or umbrolly) is a canopy designed to protect against rain or sunlight. The term parasol usually refers to an item designed to protect from the sun, "Parasol" coming from "para", meaning to stop or to shield and "sol" meaning sun. The word umbrella comes from the Latin word umbra, meaning shade or shadow. In Egypt, the umbrella is found in various shapes. In some instances it is depicted as a flagellum, a fan of palm-leaves or coloured feathers fixed on a long handle, resembling those now carried behind the Pope in processions. In the ancient greek feasts of Dionysos the umbrella was used, and in an old bas-relief the same god is represented as descending inferos with a small umbrella in his hand. In the Panathenaea, the daughters of the Metics, or foreign residents, carried parasols over the heads of Athenian women as a mark of inferiority.
