Description
Safe and dry under the hovering waterproof blanket you happily hold above your head, you exhale and relax as the skies send down soft showers that keep you seated and still beneath your precious piece of sky cover. The word umbrella comes from the Latin word umbra, meaning shade or shadow. In written records, the oldest reference to a collapsible umbrella is found in China, and dates to the year 21 A.D. A 1st century collapsible umbrella was found at the tomb of Wang Guang in Korea. In 1969, Bradford E. Phillips, the owner of Totes Incorporated of Loveland, Ohio obtained a patent for the first "working folding umbrella". As of 2008, the U.S. Patent Office registered three thousand active patents on umbrella-related inventions.
