Description
The vibrant village of animals inhabiting the serpentine trails of this deep green forest call out so loudly there is a temptation to instead call this rural realm a city. Scores of voices resonate between the trees and bring a seemingly still space alive with a mighty thunder of the throat. You too can join the crowd of creatures and begin to bellow your own natural song. Owing to humans occupying the territory of Portugal for thousands of years, little is left of the original vegetation. These natural environments are shaped by diverse flora, and include widespread species of pine, the chestnut, the cork-oak, the holm oak, the Portuguese oak, and eucalyptus. There are several species of diverse mammalian fauna, including the fox, badger, Iberian lynx, Iberian Wolf, wild goat, wild cat, hare, weasel, polecat, chameleon, mongoose, civet, brown bear and many others. Portugal is an important stopover for migratory birds, in places such as Cape St. Vincent or the Monchique mountain, where thousands of birds cross from Europe to Africa during the autumn or in the spring.
