Description
The water's edge at San Francisco's Pier 39 is a hotspot for tourists and wildlife alike, with its symphony of barking sea lions lazily lounging on floating platforms generously laid out for their comfort. These massive fatty creatures sit proudly and unafraid as thousands of tourists watch them battle it out for the best spot to sleep. Although fluctuations in the number of sea lions at Pier 39 are dramatic, as many as 1139 have been officially reported at one time. Pier 39 was first developed by entrepreneur Warren Simmons and opened October 4, 1978. From the pier one can see Angel Island, Alcatraz, the Golden Gate Bridge, and the Bay Bridge.
