Description
Below your grimy shoes is the black and grey expanse of concrete covering the earth. Above are the channels of cars rising from the ground on pillars of metal that mimic giant leviathans slithering through the city or ancient waterways that now carry hurried people rather than fresh liquid. The empty lots and littered passageways that mark the route overhead are stark reminders that this space is a lonely and forgotten remnant of modern society. An overpass (called a flyover in the UK and most Commonwealth countries) is a bridge, road, railway or similar structure that crosses over another road or railway. An overpass and underpass together form a grade separation. The world's first railroad flyover was constructed in 1843 by the London and Croydon Railway at Norwood Junction railway station to carry its atmospheric railway vehicles over the Brighton Main Line.
