Description

The cool waters of the northwest wash upon the shore as if they too shiver beneath the billowing clouds and common rain. The bold rocks of this region stand like sentries scouting the coast for some sly common enemy standing just beyond the distant line of fog. These tall earthen friends are the last defense against strong waves that every day descend upon the soft sand, seeking to invade the countryside by washing away every last soul there is. The Oregon Coast is a region of the U.S. state of Oregon, forming the western border of the state, and stretching approximately 363 miles (584 km) to the border with California. Because of the complex geological history of the Pacific Northwest, the geography of the Oregon Coast is diversely varied, and is often separated into different regions based on geological formations. Many different species of plant and animal can be found in the region, both terrestrial and marine in nature. However, past human interaction has caused a decline in several species of animal along the coast, such as the sea otter. Strict regulations as well as modern human aid has seen a return of some species in recent years. The Oregon Coast is also the location of the Oregon Coast National Wildlife Refuge Complex, which consists of six wildlife refuges, covering 371 acres (1.50 km2), spread over a distance of 320 miles (510 km).
