Despite its hard seats, strange smell, and graffiti covers windows, this ancient relic of mass transit has a nostalgic majesty that is not easily ignored. In 1890 the City & South London Railway in London built the first electric rapid transit railway. Asia's oldest commuter lines were constructed in India in 1853 making them the oldest on the continent. Asia's first cities to have subway lines were Tokyo in 1927 and Osaka in 1933. By 1940, there were 19 systems, and by 1984, there were 66. This sound uses the following sound file from Freesound: http://www.freesound.org/samplesViewSingle.php?id=90170
