Old Fashioned Water Pump

Birds singsong along the sun strewn scenery as you push and pull the ornery old pump with all your might. Calloused hands hold tightly to the cool metal while firm muscles force the fresh water wandering below to rise into the air of the day and into your trusty rusty bucket. Much attention has been given to the benefits of the use of hand pumps in developing nations, as opposed to more traditional methods. In November 2002, the United Nations Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights asserted that access to clean, safe water goes beyond the classification of water as an economic commodity. The committee stressed the fundamental right of sufficient access to clean water for both domestic and personal use. However, there is controversy surrounding the sustainability of hand pumps, and the long-term gains from investing in them.
