Mile Rocks Lighthouse

Sitting alone in the dense fog, exposed to the ocean spray filled wind, and at the mercy of raw turbulent nature, is a squat little lighthouse called Mile Rocks. Nobody notices this lonely little island of concrete and metal among the vastness of the San Francisco Bay, but rest assured, it would be sorely missed if it were to disappear from its spot above the waves. The lighthouse was built in 1906 on a rock that measures only 40 by 30 feet (9.1 m), about 2 miles (3.2 km) southwest of the Golden Gate Bridge. The base of the tower is a large block of concrete protected by steel plating that in the foundation alone weighs 1,500 tons. It housed the fog signal apparatus and the quarters for the keepers, with the lantern above. In 1966, all of the tower was removed and only the first story was left, and the light automated.
