Description

Relax as you take a seat with your fellow travelers, and speed past the traffic jams in your head. Light rail is a type of urban public transportation that has a lower capacity and speed than heavy rail and metro systems, but a higher capacity and higher speed than street-running tram systems. The term light rail was devised in 1972 by U.S. authorities to describe new streetcar transformations taking place in Europe and the United States. The first light rail systems in North America began in 1978 when the Canadian city of Edmonton, Alberta adopted the German Siemens-Duewag U2 system, followed three years later by Calgary, Alberta and San Diego, California.
