Description
Soft splashes slowly sprinkle around you as your canoe saunters down the the river, filling the simple foggy day with a tinkling tune that touches your most sacred heartstrings. Seemingly marooned in a sea of moisture, above and below, you calmly continue your journey, knowing that both heaven and earth favor a peaceful passage, if you but have faith. The oldest known canoe in the world was discovered in the Netherlands. According to carbon dating analysis it was constructed somewhere between 8200 and 7600 BCE. Canoes are propelled by the use of paddles. Paddling can be contrasted with rowing, where the rowers face away from the direction of travel. Many indigenous peoples of the Americas built canoes of tree bark, sewn with tree roots and sealed with resin. Wood-and-canvas canoes have undergone a resurgence in recent years, spurred in part by the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association.
