The overwhelming rush felt when you first hear the sound of the approaching ice cream truck is like nothing else on earth. Panic stricken children and adults alike rush from their front doors waving wallets in the air hoping to catch the cruising cache of yumminess before it goes by. Once the truck is stopped, it's a battle to be the first person to cash-in on some vanilla vanity, taking the first lick of soft serve before anyone else on the block. No matter how many days in a row you make the trek outside for some ice cream, you will always experience the same suspense as the day before. Early trucks used relatively primitive techniques: their refrigeration was ensured by large blocks of dry ice so the motor was always turned off when the van was stopped for sales. The chimes were operated by a hand driven crank or a take-off from the motor, so they were not heard as often. In Southeast Asian countries including Thailand and Cambodia, ice cream is often sold from modified motorcycles with freezer sidecars.
