Description
Hundres of kids cram into the lunchroom waving hello to preferred friends and ignoring the undesirable others as they wait impatiently in line for the days delicacies to be dumped onto their tray by one of the brilliant masters of culinary arts and group grub, the lunch lady. Lunch lady is an American slang term for a woman who cooks and serves food in a school cafeteria; the equivalent British English term is "dinner lady". In Britain, a dinner lady also patrols the school playgrounds during the lunch breaks to maintain order amongst the children. Since the 1960s, lunch ladies have sometimes been caricatured as overweight, uncaring women with hairnets, rubber gloves, glasses and moles. It has been said that the "cafeteria craze started in May 1905, when a woman named Helen Mosher opened a humble downtown L.A. restaurant where people chose their food at a long counter and carried their own trays to their tables."
