Description

Soft drops descending from heaven have all the world standing still as creatures and cars keep under cover, and await patiently as the world is reminded of its humble place beneath the clouds and refreshed with a cool cascade of clean crisp rainwater. Coalescence occurs when water droplets fuse to create larger water droplets. Air resistance typically causes the water droplets in a cloud to remain stationary. When air turbulence occurs, water droplets collide, producing larger droplets. As these larger water droplets descend, coalescence continues, so that drops become heavy enough to overcome air resistance and fall as rain. Raindrops have sizes ranging from 0.1 millimetres (0.0039 in) to 9 millimetres (0.35 in) mean diameter, above which they tend to break up.
