Let the sound of a huge piece of hot metal thumping away get you in the mood to cruise on down the winding road in your head. The classic Harley-Davidson engines are two-cylinder, V-twin engines with the pistons mounted in a 45° "V". This design causes the pistons to fire at uneven intervals which gives the Harley its unique choppy "potato-potato" sound, basically a throaty growling with some popping. On February 1st 1994, the company filed a trademark application for the distinctive sound of a Harley-Davidson motorcycle, but dropped its application after complaints from competitors.
