Description
Parisians pass through the tremendous metro station usually on their way to work or perhaps simply spending the day wandering through the city. They chatter and chew on a morning croissant while waiting for the whistle of an approaching carriage. The seemingly seamless hum of the whole human experience is broken only by the occasional announcement by some lovely lady over the loudspeaker. Gare Du Nord is one of the six large terminus stations of the mainline metro network for Paris, France. The complex was designed by French architect Jacques Hittorff and built between 1861 and 1864. The station turned out to be too small in size for the traffic and was partially demolished in 1860 to provide space for the current station. The original station's façade was removed and transferred to Lille. Eight majestic statues crown the building, illustrating international destinations, with the ninth figure of Paris in the center. Twelve more modest statues of northern French cities are arrayed lower on the facade.
