Fireworks Show

The dark of night is turned into blinding streaks of light as bursts of red and blue break the silence and send sparks flying in every direction. These bursts both large and small hammer through the chilly air and into the half closed ears of both onlookers and the endless rows of residents trying to fall asleep in their beds. Fireworks were invented in ancient China in the 12th century to scare away evil spirits, as a natural extension of the Chinese invention of gunpowder. Such important events and festivities as Chinese New Year and the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival were and still are times when fireworks are guaranteed sights. China is the largest manufacturer and exporter of fireworks in the world. Fireworks competitions are also regularly held at a number of places. One of the most prestigious fireworks competition is the Montreal Fireworks Festival, an annual competition held in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
