Description
Bottlenose dolphins are brilliant marine mammals. Their level of intelligence is supreme, enabling them to be trained for both entertainment and military tasks. Bottlenose dolphins are known to hunt in pods (groups) or individually. A common hunting tactic used to locate prey is echolocation. Similar to sonar, echolocation allows the dolphins to emit clicking sounds, they listen to the returning echo to locate objects both near to them and in the distance. Dolphins also use sound for communication, not unlike other animals with impressive levels of intelligence. Squeaks and whistles are emitted from the blowhole. The extent as to what the dolphins communicate is unknown, however it is quite possible that some whistle-like sounds are used for identification purposes.
