Description

Under the swelling blue sea is a whole world of sound that spans many miles, signaling some smiling creature's escapades with one thing or another. This special serenade is a tongue of infinite complexity, used to express the need to eat, escape, or find a fancy lover floating off somewhere in the distant sandy shore. Dolphins are capable of making a broad range of sounds using nasal airsacs located just below the blowhole. Roughly three categories of sounds can be identified: frequency modulated whistles, burst-pulsed sounds and clicks. Dolphins communicate with their whistles and burst-pulsed sounds, though the nature and extent of that ability is not known. At least some dolphin species can identify themselves using a signature whistle. The clicks are directional and are for echolocation, often occurring in a short series called a click train. The click rate increases when approaching an object of interest. Dolphin echolocation clicks are amongst the loudest sounds made by marine animals.
