Description

Note* This sound can only be heard with excellent earphones. As you sit in your cozy room, a sound approaching from the south grows stronger. A vibration, seeming to come straight up from the earth and into your body, breaking apart every little imagining you have ever had about the end of the world. And now in this moment, you stare into space, hoping that the rumbling of the earth is just a slight case of stomach indigestion. Bass describes tones of low frequency or range. Played in an ensemble/orchestra, such notes are frequently used to provide a counterpoint or counter-melody, in a harmonic context either to outline or juxtapose the progression of the chords, or with percussion to underline the rhythm. In popular music the bass part most often provides harmonic and rhythmic support, usually playing the root or fifth of the chord and stressing the strong beats. The earliest keyboard bass instrument was the 1960 Fender Rhodes piano bass. In the 1970s, a variant form of keyboard bass, bass pedals, became popular. Bass pedals are pedal keyboards operated by musicians using their feet. In the 1990s and 2000s, 25-note MIDI keyboard controllers are used to play the basslines in some pop groups. Keyboard bass instruments are a common alternative to bass guitars in rap, modern R&B, and in electronic dance music such as house music.
