Description
The calm ocean waves shimmer in the slowly receding sunlight as casual couples cast shadows onto the water from the pier above. A faint voice or seagull call carries in the background as the sound of the sea breaking onto shore cascades throughout the aural landscape. Crystal Pier extends outward from the shoreline of the Pacific Beach district of San Diego, California, and is used for the pleasure of residents and tourists. Pleasure piers were first built in England, during the 19th century. These piers often include other amusements and theatres as part of the attraction. Early pleasure piers were of wooden construction, with iron structures being introduced in 1855 with the construction of Margate Jetty, in Margate, England.
