Description

The little lost box of music stirs to life in the middle of the room. Untouched by human hands, somehow it spins and sends out its sweet little song for the horrified audience to enjoy. How does it play with no person to push its parts into action, you ask? This is when you notice a small spark along the inside of the box and before you can open your mouth to scream the smiling little head of a grey skinned, half dead child peaks over the edge and winks in your direction. The music box is an automatic musical instrument that produces sounds by the use of a set of pins placed on a revolving cylinder or disc so as to pluck the tuned teeth of a steel comb. For most of the 19th century, the bulk of musical box production was concentrated in Switzerland, building upon a strong watchmaking tradition. The first musical box factory was opened there in 1815. At the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th, most musical boxes were gradually replaced by player pianos, which were louder and more versatile and melodious, when kept tuned, and by the smaller gramophones which had the advantage of playing back voices.
