Description
Male cicadas have loud noisemakers called "timbals", which vibrate rapidly to produce a high pitched clicking sound that is amplified and modulated based on how the cicada moves its abdomen. Cicada songs are among the loudest of all insect-produced sounds and sometimes so high-pitch that humans are unable to hear it. These sounds are usually heard during the hotter hours of a summer day and are usually produced by extremely large groups of cicadas at the same time.
