These free range chickens are allowed to roam the premises of their Illinois farm all day. Farmers practice free range to obtain humane certification and improve the quality of their product. Before the 1920s farmers relied on free range to keep their chickens healthy. The discovery of vitamins A and D, however, allowed farmers to practice poultry confinement on a commercial scale by eliminating the stock's need for green feed and sunlight.
