Description

The Scottish sea spills back and forth as the sacred sounds of seagulls scanning the coast for an easy catch carries through the wind like waves of wandering minstrels tuning their instruments in the distance. Catterline is a coastal village on the North Sea in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. The artist Joan Eardley lived in the village in the 1950s up until her death in 1963. Many of her wild seascapes were painted here. Catterline lies six kilometers from the site of the oldest air-breathing invertebrate ever discovered, found at Stonehaven's Cowie Beach. The local area also includes many prehistorical artifacts from the Bronze Age. The Catterline Cartie Challenge is a competition for home made soapbox carts held annually. It was first held in 2005, when 11 carties were entered. The number of entries has grown in subsequent years, and in 2008 there were 26 carties competing.
