        Description
The low drone of cars streaming through the underground passageway is an iconic sound of the urban scene that is certain to hypnotize. There is a vibrancy here, within this concrete chamber, beneath the earth, at one with the rushing urban maelstrom, along the veins of the city that flow rich with life. For water crossings, a tunnel is generally more costly to construct than a bridge. But bridges usually require a larger footprint on each shore than tunnels. In areas with expensive real estate, such as Manhattan and Hong Kong, this is a strong factor. The 1934 Queensway Road Tunnel under the River Mersey at Liverpool, England, was chosen for defensive reasons. It was feared aircraft could destroy a bridge in times of war.
