Description
An unquenchable thirst within the crowd for the sight of sport and blood, an overwhelming lust that runs rampant along the isles, charging the already excited audience up into a frenzy of animalistic onlookers that are barely able to remain seated as two large bodies pummel each other within the square ring. Evidence of fist-fighting contests first appear on ancient Sumerian, Egyptian, Assyrian and Minoan reliefs. The ancient Greeks provide us our first historical records of boxing as a formal sport; they codified a set of rules and staged tournaments with professionals. It was accepted as an Olympic game as early as 688 BC. In 1927 Dr. E. A. Speiser, an archaeologist, discovered a Mesopotamian stone tablet in Baghdad, Iraq depicting two men getting ready for a prize fight. The tablet is believed to be 7,000 years old.
