Description
The low rumble of fast moving cars underscores the chatter of local birds chirping all around the avenue as they peek around corners and peck at the slightest sign of a fallen berry or croissant crumb. Imagine yourself perched on a high wire, watching the people below busting about on their way to work or a whimsical lunch date. Humans have had a profound effect on many bird species. Over one hundred species have gone extinct in historical times. According to Worldwatch Institute, many bird populations are currently declining worldwide, with 1,200 species facing extinction in the next century. The largest source of human-related bird death is due to glass windows, which kill 100-900 million birds a year. The next largest sources of human caused death are hunting (100+ million), house cats (100 million), cars and trucks (50 to 100 million), electric power lines (174 million), and pesticides (67 million).
