Description

This vast cavern of urban motion captures all the little sounds, near and close, that are brought into being as Berlin's commuters hustle from one place to the next. A child in the distance calls to his mother as a weary traveller waits for a train pulling in and the station information is announced over the loudspeaker. Berlin Hauptbahnhof is the main railway station in Berlin, Germany and the largest crossing station in Europe. The main station hall is spanned by a curved glass roof with a surface area of about 85 metres by 120 metres, with a photovoltaic system integrated into the glass surface. The upper level of the station has six tracks and eight on the lower level. 1,800 trains call at the station per day and the daily number of passengers is estimated to be at 350,000.
