Description
The supreme silence of this Australian forest is subtly swept aside by the sweet and gentle sounds of this small bird. Like the bells of some wandering priestly nomad, the tinkling tones are an entirely intoxicating experience that can cause a listener to transcend the forest floor and float away into the distant white clouds. Bellbirds live in large, complex social groups. Within each group there are subgroups consisting of several breeding pairs, but also included are a number of birds who are not breeding. The nonbreeders help in providing food for the young in all the nests in the subgroup, even though they may not be closely related to them
