Description
The sweet smell of spring rains remove any doubt that the sun and sky rule the world, waking and washing the rocks, trees and creatures below, equally. You end up outside, with arms wide, accepting the abundance of the land as it is filled up with the true nectar of the gods, thankful for another day of heavenly grace. April showers is a term that denotes spring rains in some parts of the northern hemisphere, in particular the UK, during the month of April. One of the major causes of the often heavy downpours is the position of the jet stream. In early spring, the jet stream starts to move northwards, allowing large depressions to bring strong winds and rain in from the Atlantic. In one day the weather can change from springtime sunshine to winter sleet and snow. The track of these depressions can often be across Ireland and Scotland bringing bands of rain followed by heavy showers (often of hail or snow) and strong blustery winds. The expression "April showers bring May flowers" is a common expression in English speaking countries, and the source of poetry and songs. April was originally the second month of the Roman calendar, before January and February were added by King Numa Pompilius about 700 BC. It became the fourth month of the calendar year (the year when twelve months are displayed in order) during the time of the decemvirs about 450 BC, when it also was given 29 days.
