Description
The wistful wind wanders through the Portuguese mountain pass carrying the sounds of singing birds perched in the sun and bright yellow bees buzzing through golden fields, stopping to feast on the occasional blue blossom. Relax as the warm sun sends your senses to the other side of the Atlantic and makes your mindful worries no more. Alentejo is the south-central region of Portugal separated from the rest of the country by the Tagus river. The countryside varies considerably, from the open rolling plains of the south to the granite hills that border Spain in the north-east. Alentejo is the most depopulated region in the country, representing over one third of national territory but only 7.1% of its population. It is also the region with the oldest population. It is the home of the world's most important area for the growing of cork. The harvest of one mature Cork tree provides sufficient bark to produce about 4,000 wine bottle corks.
